Nice

Slept with the bedroom window open last night. Our headboard is right under the window, so the breeze passes over us all night (yes, I know, bad feng shui, I don't care).

Woke up this morning to the sound of rain, a bit of a cool breeze. Pulled the sheets up to my chin and just laid there for 20 minutes enjoying the peacefulness of Spring rain.

Have you ever noticed the difference in the way rain presents itself. Sometimes it slams to the ground with all the speed of a speeding train (Superman Rain). There are times it just falls and times the clouds just bucket rain.

This morning's rain was like Capitola Village rain, coming to earth with incredible gentleness as if it didn't want to bruise any spring flowers or damage new growth on the trees and bushes.

The scent of the earth was magnificent. Yes, I am a fan of petrichor. Can there be a better odor in the world than rain on dry earth? It is almost as if petrichor, itself, is a key to personal memories and ancient memories. One's whole body responds!

I think I'll get a sweatshirt on and take the dogs for a walk in the rain to enjoy the freshness of the day.

Then we can return to the house and relish in the scent of wet dog!

  1. You've set me to thinking of all the kinds of rain. How disappointed I've been all spring with the mild rains, even though I could hear them falling all night, but not intense enough to fill the rain barrel. How I hated filling the watering can with "spigot" water. How pleased I've been the last couple of storms that beat down. I wished I had two rain barrels!

    1. Think about the lost water as your donation to the fish in the sea! We were planning on getting a couple of rain barrels and found out our city bans them!

  2. Hi Toni :) So nice to see your lovely post! We've been falling asleep with the window open lately too and we hear the spring peepers as we doze off, and like you, pull up the blankies in the morning because it still gets rather chilly overnight. I LOVE the fragrance of rain and of wet dogs!! :)

  3. Hi Toni - good to see you ... and yes isn't it lovely having the fresh air blow in ... while we're still tucked up warmly. Taking the dog out for a walk sounds an excellent idea - though having wet dog smell not quite so good ... enjoy your Memorial Day weekend - cheers Hilary

    1. Wet dog is not so bad at my house, plenty of lemon-eucalyptus in my oil warmers.

Cheers back at you, enjoy the long weekend!

    1. No rain today. Supposed to get to 100! Best way to toss and turn instead of sleep!!!

Isn't it weird how calm one day can be, then life hooks you and reels you in? Been crazy busy again. I should start a new blog and call it My Life In Spurts!

  8. I think I need to live where you where a sweatshirt at this time of year. I am dying with humidity and heat. Nothing better than a rainy day. We've had about 50 of them in the last 2 months so I am over it right now. But normally I love a rainy day with the smell of rain wafting in the windows.

    1. You should live in Santa Cruz! Got a million bucks to buy a nice 3 bedroom house in a good neighborhood?
